October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Students in kindergarten learned and practiced how they could work to fill each others' buckets to promote positive peer relationships. First graders discussed how to recognize bullying behavior, and they learned strategies they can use to end bullying. This month 1st grade students also learned the difference between tattling and reporting and how they can report unsafe behaviors to trusted adults.
In 2nd grade, students identified the difference between being a bystander and an upstander, along with steps they can use to get help if someone is being bullied. Students in 3rd grade learned the acronym M.O.O. (Mean, On purpose, Over and over) to help them identify bullying behavior. Fourth grade students read the story Simon's Hook and learned strategies on how to respond to teases and put downs in a calm manner. Students in 5th grade read the story Just Kidding and discussed how harmless teasing can often lead to hurtful teasing, which is a form of bullying.
